TRAVEL – Another trip to my most visited city in the world: NYC

New York City is a vibrant and diverse destination with a unique energy all of its own. It’s probably my most visited city in the world and I enjoy being there every time I go. There is always a lot to see and do, and if you’re part of the LGBTQ community, there are plenty of venues there just for us.

One of the first places I visited on this trip was The Stonewall Inn, which is of course an important and historic landmark in our community. It’s a bar in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan that was the site of the Stonewall riots in 1969, a turning point in the fight for LGBTQ rights.

Romantic & sexual exclusivity: Survey by UQAM professors reveals Canadian values regarding love

Is romantic exclusivity still popular in 2023? Do Canadians still wish to cultivate an exclusive sexual relationship with a partner? More than 4000 people across Canada responded to a survey that was part of the Mapping Contemporary Love and Intimacy Ideals in Canada (MACLIC) project, based at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), and shared their views on the ideal relationship.
Romance is still in vogue among Canadian adults in an intimate relationship: "Our results show that Canadians in an intimate relationship expressed a stronger endorsement for romantic exclusivity than for sexual exclusivity as a relationship ideal," says Chiara Piazzesi, sociology professor at UQAM and principal investigator of MACLIC. LGBTQ youth in juvenile correctional facilities at high risk for suicide and self-harm

A new study from the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law finds that LGBTQ youth are disproportionally represented in juvenile correctional facilities. The majority of LGBTQ youth held in custody are girls (64%) and youth of color (72%), and they face a significantly greater risk of suicidal ideation, suicide attempt, and self-harm.
Using data from the Minnesota Student Survey, a statewide population survey of youth, researchers from UCLA, Vanderbilt, Brown, and Yale Universities examined the mental health experiences of LGBTQ and non-LGBTQ youth in juvenile correctional facilities and public schools. Results…

LGBT people nine times more likely than non-LGBT people to be victims of violent hate crimes

About one out of 10 violent victimizations against LGBT people are hate crimes, according to a new study by the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law. LGBT people are nine times more likely than non-LGBT people to be victims of violent hate crimes. In addition, LGBT violent hate crime victims are more likely to be younger, have a relationship with their assailant, and have an assailant who is white.
Researchers analyzed hate crime data from the 2017-2019 National Crime Victimization Survey, the first nationally representative and comprehensive criminal victimization data to include information on the sexual orientation and gender identity of respondents.
