INTERVIEW – You Can Count on Sharon Stone: Screen icon on how “Basic Instinct” influenced her LGBTQ activism, acting with Ellen and what her dad meant to her gay friends

Sharon StoneThat scene. You know the one: the one in Basic Instinct where Sharon Stone’s legs are open. It’s been talked about and talked about, and talked about some more. It’s been talked about so much in the years since it shook the world in 1992 that it has diminished the other non-crotch facets of Sharon Stone.

What nobody talks about anymore is her heart, her courage and her activism. As Stone pushed through the male-dominating Hollywood sphere of the 1990s to reach top-tier cinematic heights through her work in 1990’s Total Recall and then Basic Instinct, an Oscar nomination for  Casino solidifying her influential screen presence, she was giving a voice to the voiceless. She was speaking up for marginalized women. She was speaking up for the LGBTQ community. She was speaking up for herself.

And to this day, she still does.

Stone’s enduring affinity with the LGBTQ community might explain why working for the first time with Ryan Murphy, known for bringing actresses over 50 (Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, and now Stone) into his lavishly stylized queerverse of prestige TV, was so special. In Murphy’s dark dramedy Ratched for Netflix, an origins story of Nurse Ratched of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, the 62-year-old actress portrays the deliciously insane Lenore Osgood, a rich, twice-widowed mother who’d rather spend time with her Capuchin monkey than her queer son (played by openly gay actor Brandon Flynn). The series also stars out actresses Sarah Paulson, as nurse Mildred Ratched, and Sex and the City star and political activist Cynthia Nixon, who portrays Gwendolyn Briggs, the press secretary for the Governor of California.

When I spoke with Stone recently by phone, she did talk about the show’s queerness. But it was the touching story of her late father, Joe, who took her gay friends under his wing, that you won’t forget.

GayCalgary: Where do you think your role as Lenore Osgood will rate on the "Things Queer People Love That Ive Done" scale?

Sharon Stone: Right? (Laughs.) I have to say that it’s full of beauty and full of style and full of the immense tenderness that happens when we confront abuse. And because of the nature of what it is to live a queer life, I think all of that will be very moving.

GC: While watching Ratched, I was reflecting on your LGBTQ roles. Theres…

Pride Journey: South Africa

I first visited South Africa six years ago with a group of friends. It was one of the most incredible journeys I had ever been on, and I knew I wanted to return. I fell in love with Cape Town and of course, all the animals we saw while on safari, so when the opportunity came to visit the country again, I knew I couldn’t pass it up.

Cape Town is one of my favorite cities in the world. Words can’t describe how beautiful the city is especially when you venture outside the city center and explore the beautiful scenic overlooks surrounding the Cape of Good Hope offering stunning views of the Atlantic and Indian oceans.

I stayed at the Capital 15 on Orange, a modern boutique hotel located just outside of the city center which boasts a grand lobby, a fully equipped fitness center, and a wonderful restaurant. Most hotels in South Africa include breakfast so be sure to research those options before you book. The breakfast buffet at the Capital 15 was one of the best I’ve ever had. It will help you save a bit of money even though at the moment, the exchange rate is quite favorable for American tourists.

My favorite aspect of Capital 15 was the room. I’ve stayed in many hotel rooms over the years, and this one comes close to the top of my list. The room features a king-size bed with luxury linens, an enormous bathroom with a walk-in shower and a separate soaking tub as well as unobstructed views of Table Mountain, one of Cape Town’s most famous landmarks.

Creep of the Week: Donald Trump

Quick, look out your window! You may get a fleeting glimpse of our so-called president waving through the window of a hermetically sealed SUV after testing positive for the novel coronavirus because he just Loves! America! So! Much!

Now, while some might say that Trump’s complete disregard for medical advice and disdain for any kind of rules was basically asking to be infected with COVID-19, they would be right. This diagnosis was a hard-fought outcome. It’s nice to see Trump work hard at something for once.

Trump’s positive COVID-19 test naturally caused some concerns. I mean, it’s a generally a bad thing when the president gets sick. Trump being flown to Walter Reed increased anxieties about his health. As did the bizarre videos he posted from the hospital. But, thankfully, Trump is the King of Stamina and Health and Manliness and he’s got a message for America: COVID-19…

Deep Inside Hollywood: ‘Run’ from horror-mom Sarah Paulson

Sarah Paulson Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan make music in Maestro

The late, legendary American composer/conductor Leonard Bernstein was gay. He was also married to a woman, Felicia Cohn Montealegre, who understood his homosexuality, and chose to be with him. It was the 1950s, and this sort of thing was not uncommon for queer people, and it makes for a fascinating entry point for a drama about the closet. Enter Bradley Cooper, moving on to his next directorial project after A Star Is Born, with a new film for Netflix called Maestro, in which he’ll star as Bernstein. Joining him on screen as Montealegre will be Carey Mulligan. Cooper’s been working with the Bernstein family for a few years now, developing the project, one that will cover the couple’s…
